An Incredible Look At How Symmetry Changes Our Faces

It has become known in psychology that the more symmetrical a person’s face, the more attractive they must be. We know people like George Clooney and Brad Pitt have super symmetrical faces, which is one reason why they are continually named some of the most handsome men in the world.

But, what about the symmetry in the faces of the rest of us? Surely everyone is beautiful no matter how symmetrical their face is, so how would we ordinary folk look if our faces were symmetrical?

One artist named Alex John Beck set out to explore this in a series of breathtaking portraits. Take a look and let us know what you think in the COMMENTS!

Both Sides Of is a project created by the talented photographer, Alex John Beck.

As we know, none of us have perfectly symmetrical faces. However, I don’t know about you, but I never really considered that either side of my face could be that different. Apparently, though, it can be the case that when isolated, each side of your face could make you look completely different!

Beck started the project because he wanted to explore the myth of symmetrical faces.

“Two beliefs,” he says, “1) a perfectly symmetrical face is most beautiful. 2) The face is representative of the character. Yet each face, beautiful or otherwise, can be made symmetrical. Thus may be beautiful.” This guy’s face looks the same, almost…except you can really see the difference in the lips and forehead. What do you think?

“We give weight to each side of the face…

“…making two faces from one face, two faces from one moment captured by one photograph.” A beautiful and somewhat eerie sentiment. What I think is interesting is that in the series, the artist didn’t include the original portrait. He said, “I just didn’t want people referring back and forth from the original the whole time. After all, the original is just a boring portrait”

Beck continues to say, “And within these new forms we see the two characters that are ever present, embedded in the single face.”

I feel as though this looks like two different people! Isn’t that crazy? To think these two faces came from one face?
