12 Actors Who Refused "Harry Potter" Roles

It’s almost impossible to think of the Harry Potter movies without the actors who played the legendary characters. What would the films have been like if Helen McCrory played Bellatrix Lestrange instead of Helena Bonham Carter? Or if David Tennant hadn’t made the jump from Doctor Who to portraying Barty Crouch Jr.? I seriously can’t picture anyone else in those roles. Also, who would turn down a role in Harry Potter?! I think that’s the real question here.

Well, believe it or not, these 12 actors really did decline parts in Harry Potter. Find out who they are and which parts they were offered to play.

1. Ian McKellan

After playing Gandalf the Grey in the Lord of the Rings films, Ian felt that he had played enough wizards for the time being, even though he was a favorite to portray Dumbledore.

2. Kate Duchêne

Known for her role on the TV series The Worst Witch, Kate was reportedly approached for a part in the second Harry Potter film but declined.

3. Patrick McGoohan

The classic actor was considered for the role of Dumbledore but turned it down due to health reasons.

4. Tim Roth

Before J.K. Rowling handpicked Alan Rickman, Tim Roth was in the running for Severus Snape. He dropped out so that he could star in Planet of the Apes instead.

Could anyone besides Emma Thompson play Professor Trelawney? It almost happened…
