15 Unexpectedly Gross Items That Should Be Changed Or Replaced In Your Home

Cleaning is definitely not the most exciting or enjoyable task, but it is very important. Even if you keep up with your regular chores, you may be surprised to learn that there are some spots in your home that haven’t been getting as much attention as they deserve. In some cases, the dirtiest things in your home are the ones you use to clean other things! Obviously, this is counter-productive to the cleaning process and you could actually be spreading germs around your home instead of killing them. To find out which items you should be cleaning more regularly — or just throwing out altogether — keep reading. I was so surprised about #13!

1. Kitchen sponges

If you regularly use your kitchen sponge to wash the dishes, make sure to disinfect it with warm water and bleach daily. All kitchen sponges should be tossed out after a month of use, and sooner if you notice a funky smell.

2. Dish towels

Ensure that you have separate dish towels for drying dishes and your hands to avoid cross-contamination. Wash dish towels regularly in hot water and dry them on a high heat cycle to kill bacteria.

3. Cutting boards

Once your cutting board has deep grooves in it from slicing and dicing, it’s time to throw it out. Those grooves can trap bacteria and make it impossible to clean. You should always have separate cutting boards for raw meat and items like bread, cheese, and produce.

Next up is the bathroom! You might be surprised what kinds of items you’ll need to throw away or clean in there.
