Man Born Female Gives Birth To Baby Fathered By Woman Born Male

Last year, Fernando and Diane made news around the world when the couple revealed they were expecting. This June, their baby (whom they’ve affectionately nicknamed “Caraote” — the snail) was born.

It wasn’t your typical pregnancy, per se, because Fernando was actually the one carrying the baby.

Meet Fernando.

Fernando Machado was born Maria in Ecuador, where being transgender is not easy. Though he hasn’t undergone gender reassignment surgery, he is living life as himself, rather than as a woman.

Meet Diane.

Diane Rodriguez was previously Luis, and never thought that motherhood would be in the cards for her. “Being a mother was never something I thought I would do because I am a transsexual… The law before demanded that to be recognized as a woman you had to be castrated.”Diane works as an LGBT activist and has been very vocal about transgender rights. She was the first transgender candidate in Ecuador to run for Congress.

Meet their Caraote.

In an interview for BBC, Fernando said of realizing they’d have a baby, “I started crying with happiness, fear, and dread, all at once. It was the most beautiful moment.”In many ways, they’re no different than any other family. “We live as man and woman. I’m a transfeminine woman and Fernando is a transmasculine man,” Diane told interviewers. “The process to get here was complex for each of us. Knowing it’s our right, we decided to add another member to our family.”
