Why Tomato Juice Is So Popular On Planes, And It"s Not Alcohol

When we hop on a flight, where does your mind usually go? Peanuts? Sometimes. Tomato juice? Always. Have you ever noticed how tomato juice isn’t all that tasty when you’re on the ground, but when you get into a plane, bam, there’s the random urge to drink tomato juice?

Science has discovered why we crave this beverage on flights, and it might not be the reason you suspect.

Leave a COMMENT on Facebook letting know if you fancy tomato juice

So you board the plane, find your seat, and eventually take off.

You know after takeoff that it’s time for the beverages to start flowing. What do you choose?

Airlines have noticed that a surprising amount of people order tomato juice on flights, and not even with alcohol.

To put things into perspective, German airliner Lufthansa serves roughly 53,000 gallons of tomato juice every year. We all know how much Germans love their beer, right? Well, the amount of tomato juice almost matches the 59,000 gallons of beer they serve every year. How is that even possible?!

Okay, let me tell you.

To find out what was causing such an intense interest in tomato juice, Lufthansa collaborated with a research group called the Fraunhofer Society to get to the bottom of this mystery.

First, these researchers put subjects in a flight simulator that recreated just about every aspect of the flying experience.
