World"s Largest "Big Bend" Skyscraper Proposed For NY Skyline

As if the New York City skyline needed any more eye candy, local studio Oiio recently proposed a brand new arched building for West 57th Street.

Their “skyscraper” would be more of a thin structure, curving at the top before plummeting back down to earth, completing the arch. While there’s no real plan to build it yet, the spec images look fantastic. Take a look at a few below.

If constructed, the building would measure 4,000 feet (1.22 km) in overall length from side to side.

Designers at Oiio purposely wanted to design the longest structure in the world.

Oiio proposed the arched building for Manhattan’s 57th Street, a major hub for mega structures.

Zoning laws in New York City allow for air rights to be sold from neighboring buildings. That’s why constructing this arched structure is be possible.

“New York City’s zoning laws have created a peculiar set of tricks, through which developers try to maximize their property’s height in order to infuse it with the prestige of a high-rise structure,” the studio said.

The legs of the building itself would straddle an already existing one, snugly resting on pre-measured plots on either side.

Some of New York City’s architects are speaking out against construction of more super tall structures. Do you think the Big Apple needs any more?
