They call it the “fog of war.”

It’s the uncertainty in situational awareness experienced by soldiers or civilians at war. So much is happening, including trauma and physical pain, that people in war zones have a foggy memory of what actually happened on the battlefield.

That fog is arguably what happened to staff sergeant Bobby Henline in 2007.

“I was in the lead vehicle,” Henline recalls. “The only thing I remember is having coffee that morning.”

An improvised explosive device (IED) went off near his vehicle just north of Baghdad, Iraq.

The explosive killed everyone in the vehicle but Heline. He survived and now lives with burns to 38% of his body.

Within 72 hours, he was transported to a specialized burn unit at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.

On top of Henline’s burns, part of his left arm was amputated. And even though he lost his arm, he certainly didn’t lose his spirit.
