9 Reasons Artists Are The Weirdest Kind Of People

I thought art used to mean just painting a picture. You’d get a canvas, some brushes, some different colors and you’d be on your way. And it was easy to tell if you were a good artist or not. Did your painting turn out awesome? Hooray, you’re an artist! Was it a total fail? Sorry, time for a different career. Now art is a lot more . . . complicated. And by complicated, we mean straight-up bizarre. Check out this list of reasons why artists are now considered the weirdest kind of people.

1. They make science weird.

Artist Diemut Strebe teamed up with some scientists from MIT to regrow Vincent Van Gogh’s ear. Seriously. They extracted DNA from a stamp that Van Gogh licked once upon a time in order to artificially recreate the troubled artist’s missing ear. Strebe calls the piece Sugababe, and it sits suspended in a transparent gel.

2. They take bizarre pictures.

This artist, known as Photographer Hal, wraps couples in plastic futon covers then proceeds to suck all the air out using a vacuum cleaner. Willing couples who want their portrait taken have to hold their breath for 10 seconds. He calls his series Flesh Love.

3. They can turn anything into “art.”

This is a urinal flipped onto its back and signed. No, the artist didn’t even make it — he just found it. But according to the world-famous Tate art gallery, Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain is “widely seen as an icon of twentieth-century art.” Go figure.

4. They do odd things to their pets.

In 2012, artist Bart Jansen’s cat, Orville, got hit by a car. But rather than simply bury his pet, Jansen turned Orville into a remote control drone. Not surprisingly, his so-called “Orvillecopter” has sparked outrage around the world.
