In an emergency, it’s important to be as prepared as possible. Sometimes, though, you may find yourself in a situation without your flashlight or candles, or you may have forgotten to stock up on the proper batteries. It happens. 1. Light a crayon.
This extremely clever tip can buy you up to 30 minutes of light in an emergency situation that results in a blackout. The paper will burn and will be sustained by the wax just like any other candle. The great thing about crayons is that there are usually quite a few in the box if your electricity is out for several hours. Just be careful of it tipping, though. Placing the crayons on a plate that will not catch on fire itself is an option.
At least in this case, if the crayon or crayons fall while you are not paying attention, you won’t start another emergency. 2. Convert AAA batteries into AA batteries with some tinfoil.
I haven’t tried this myself, but in the event that your flashlight batteries die or any other important device needing AA batteries dies, grab that tinfoil that you likely have in the kitchen. Bundle a ball of it together and place it where the negative terminal would usually make contact with the AA battery. The tinfoil will extend the AAA battery and should power your flashlight at least for a short period of time. 3. Sheila Pulanco Russell posted a very useful tip during the recent run-in with Hurricane Matthews that’s very helpful if you have to evacuate your home. All you need is a cup, frozen water, and a coin.
“For those of you that are evacuating from the coast, I just heard a great tip. It’s called the one cup tip. You put a cup of water in your freezer. Freeze it solid and then put a quarter on top of it and leave it in your freezer,” said Sheila in her Facebook post.
You won’t believe what this simple trick can show you that may keep your family healthy in an emergency…
