The Daily Dip: Funny Pic Dump #242

The greatest thing about the internet is its sense of humor, and I’m not just saying that because I am a so-called humor writer, but because I actually believe it. Any number of things can be funny in and of themselves, but sometimes the collective immaturity that is the internet takes things and makes them that much better. An image can become a meme. A meme can become a viral hit. Before you know it, a random, stupid, silly little picture, adorned with nothing but some white words outlined in black, can become a household item across the world, with people of all nationalities, creeds, religions, ethnic groups and orientations laughing at the same thing. For example, one simple .gif of Batman, looking distraught in the rain and re-contextualized as a man masturbating in the sprinklers on his neighbors lawn at 3:32 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month took on a life of its own and has resurfaced, religiously, every single third Tuesday since, along with a literal shit-ton of reactions and offshoots. It truly is genius, and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to know that no matter what, some things never change.

I guess what I’m saying is that the internet itself is a very fluid creature, alive in its own sense, yet only because it is a collection of smaller cells, the users. Without these users, the internet would really be nothing. It’s comforting to know that in a way, we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves, simply by being here. Basically, we are the hairspray of the internet. Like hair, the internet would be here whether or not we chose to do anything with it. Like those images, the hair would exist regardless but it takes us, the hairspray, to take that hair and really make it awesome. Dateable, even. Hair that someone would want to take home.

So good job, gang. Pat yourselves on the back.
