Baby Of Slain Officer Receives Best Gift Mothers Could Give

Four-month-old Cora Zerebny’s mother, Lesley, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday, October 8th, 2016. She had just returned to work from her maternity leave.

What started out as an online call for prayers turned into the most generous offering from new moms all over the state of California. More than 500 oz of breastmilk has been donated already — it won’t be given to baby Cora unless it is screened and tested — but this amount should last a month, and there’s still more coming in.

Lesley Zerebny was only 27.

She had been working for the police department in Palm Springs for just a year and a half. In April, she had given birth to baby daughter, Cora, and had only recently returned to work when she responded to her last call.

Her father, David Kling, was also a law enforcement officer.

He worked as a California Highway Patrol officer for 30 years. When Lesley officially became a member of the Palm Springs Police Department, he was the one to pin her police badge. Officer Kling described it as “probably the proudest moment in my life… I can still see her walking across that stage with the biggest smile on her face that you’ve ever seen.”

Lesley’s husband, Zack Zerebny, is also a Palm Springs police officer.

He was in the academy Class 192 and worked for the Palm Springs Police Department with his wife. Zack and Lesley were married for nearly five years. Cora is their only child.
