It’s no surprise that making a movie involves a lot of planning. From the sets to the costumes, right down to the placement of every extra in the background, creating a magical movie moment doesn’t just happen like that — except when it does. The movie moments on this list made the final cut, but they weren’t planned. In some cases, it was the result of a stunt gone wrong. In others, the actor simply improvised their line or forgot it all together. Did you know about any of these accidental movie moments?

1. Edward Norton punching Brad Pitt in Fight Club

Edward wasn’t actually supposed to hit Brad, but David Fincher told him to go for it right before they shot the scene. Brad saying, “You hit me in the ear” and his pain was all real and unscripted.

2. The Joker’s clap in The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger improvised the scene by joining in while everyone was congratulating Gordon, and Christopher Nolan kept the cameras rolling. The eerie slow clap made the final cut and is one of the Joker’s most infamous moments.

3. The theater fire in Inglourious Basterds

The fire was planned, but it quickly got out of control on set. Eli Roth and Omar Doom were treated for minor burns after the take, but the fire in all its out-of-control glory are in the film.

4. Don Corleone’s cat in The Godfather

Marlon Brando found the cat as a stray on the set and decided to keep it on his lap during the signature scene.
