Woman Calls Out Merriam-Webster For Being Sexist, And They Totally Changed The Dictionary

Writer Ali Segel is getting some major attention online for an interaction she had with the authority on dictionaries, Merriam-Webster. After pointing out sexist wording in the dictionary’s entry for the word “femininity,” Merriam-Webster responded by making appropriate changes to the dictionary, acknowledging their shortsightedness.

You have to see what happened. This is incredible.

Writer Ali Segel has stepped up to the plate to bat for a good cause, fighting sexism wherever it rears its ugly head.

When working one day, she happened to stumble upon an oddly phrased (to be nice) statement in the entry for “femininity” in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary.

Here is the example usage provided by the dictionary.

As you might expect, Ali didn’t take the example kindly.

She was so struck by the wording that she immediately tweeted it to her followers.

“I decided to tweet it out because yeah, that’s nuts!” she told Cosmopolitan. “Can you imagine: ‘He managed to become a CEO without sacrificing his masculinity."” What got to her the most was the effect that something as small as dictionary wording could potentially have on young women. She explained, “As someone who formerly taught elementary school, honestly, the idea of a little girl looking up a word in the dictionary and seeing a sexist definition that limits her really pissed me off.”

What happened next is pretty insane…
