Donor Bank Father Learns He Has 22 Kids And Meets Most Of Them

The plot of Delivery Man starring Vince Vaughn is as follows: Vaughn’s character has given 693 sperm donations and discovers that he has fathered 533 kids. Over 140 of those kids file a lawsuit to force the fertility clinic to reveal the anonymous donor’s identity. He counter-sues the sperm bank, wins, but eventually reveals his identity to his hundreds of children anyway. His girlfriend also has a baby and they live happily ever after.

Sperm donors have become an increasingly popular way for women to have children and start a family of their own. It’s completely possible for one donor to be the biological father of multiple children, but 533 is a little far-fetched.

Sperm donors are not obligated to be part of their kid’s lives, but when this donor’s biological children found him online, he had the best response. 

Todd Whitehurst is 49 years old and works as a computer engineer for Google. 

He attended Stanford University. One day while looking through the school newspaper, he came across an ad for young male sperm donors. Over the next four years, he donated to the same clinic around 400 times.  

A single donation to a sperm bank can produce 24 sellable vials.

That means Whitehurst could have produced up to 9600 vials for the clinic to sell.He never expected to meet any of his children because donors are required to sign an agreement to stay anonymous. Basic information such as age, ethnicity, height, birthplace and education are provided to families who want to have a donor child.   

Wendy Kramer is the mother of a donor son.

When she saw how curious her son was about his biological father, she decided to create an online database called the Donor Sibling Registry for donor children to connect. Each donor dad is given a unique ID number, which is how connections can be made.To date, 47,000 people have registered, including 2,300 donor dads.

Carey Phelps is one of Whitehurst’s donor children.

She has known since she was two years old that she is a donor child. She reached out to Whitehurst and the two became close. They kept in touch and even took trips together.But Phelps is not Whitehurst’s only donor child.
